After the Portuguese government changed immigration rules, thousands of Nepalis were affected

After the leftist government made changes to immigration rules, another significant labor destination for Europe, Portugal, has been impacted. The Portuguese government, following the introduction of new conditions for employment opportunities, is expected to affect Nepali workers more than those from other non-European Union countries.

Nepalis are also going to other European countries and Portugal for employment. Even though employment is not guaranteed in the past, after paying one year of social security, the new government has removed such provisions. According to the new arrangement, citizens of non-European countries will only be able to go to that country if they have employment security.

The new government has also halted the application process for identity cards. This has affected Nepalis who had not yet received their cards. Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro, quoted by BBC Nepali, said that around 400,000 foreign workers are now going through the legalization process in Portugal.

According to social work estimates, approximately five thousand Nepalis who have arrived in Portugal through various means have not passed the process of the immigration card. Once the process of making the immigration card stops, it has been said that some Nepalis have opted to go to other European countries.
